Jets' Defense Scores for Second Straight Week

It isn't every day that an NFL defense produces a safety. In 2022, there were only nine defensive plays that resulted in a safety the entire regular season.

For the New York Jets, however, it's been two weeks in a row.

The Jets' defense delivered a two-point play for the second straight game on Sunday. This time, they made Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos a victim. 

With the Broncos' offense backed up in their own end after an exceptional punt by Thomas Morstead, veteran defensive tackle Al Woods blew up a first-down pass play to force the safety. 

Woods, who was a gameday inactive last week, powered through the interior of the offensive line as Wilson dropped back into the endzone. The 36-year-old defensive tackle was in the process of bringing the quarterback to the turf when Wilson made a desperate attempt to throw away the ball. 

Although Woods was unable to secure the sack, he drew an intentional grounding penalty on Wilson. With the infraction occurring in the endzone, the Jets were awarded two points and possession. 

Woods was a former teammate of Wilson with the Seattle Seahawks. The 6-foot-4 road block signed a one-year contract with the Jets this past spring. He made 30 of a possible 34 starts over the prior two seasons with Seattle.

Both Jets' safeties have been the result of offensive penalties flagged in the endzone.
