Jay Cutler Has High Hopes for Justin Fields, Chicago Bears Future

A former Chicago Bears quarterback is back in town. Jay Cutler recently returned to the place he called home for eight years, but this time for the American Cornhole League. The organization is holding a tournament and Cutler is a participant, but that’s neither here nor there.

Upon returning to the Windy City, the polarizing QB has been an open book with the media. First, he had Pat McAfee on his podcast. Then he co-hosted “Waddle & Silvy” on ESPN1000 with Marc Silverman while his good friend Tom Waddle was on vacation. Additionally, Cutler spoke with Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times about his time with the Bears and how he’s been able to reflect on it after the fact. But his most significant statement had to do with Justin Fields and the current franchise QB’s future with the Bears.

Cutler was open and hopefully honest about his feelings about Fields.

“If the Bears start winning … I hope they do. And I hope Justin is successful and I hope he’s the next big thing here and he’s the best quarterback to come out of Chicago Bears history.”

The former Bears’ signal-caller also acknowledged the realities of playing the position in this city for the historic organization. Looking ahead, he shared some advice for the Bears regarding how to handle Fields. Of course, he drew from his own experiences.

“I like him…he’s got all the tools, but its the same problem the Bears have had for a long time: They’re turning over coaches and turning over OCs. It’s hard for a quarterback. You look across the league and the guys that are really good at quarterback have the same coaches and same system every year. This is like learning a different language. It’s like if I told you: ‘Hey, you’ve gotta learn Spanish this year and next year learn Italian and the next year learn Chinese.’ It’s not gonna be easy.”

It seems Jay Cutler has no hard feelings about the Bears. Likewise, he hopes for the best for the young QB and the organization. However, he knows how it is with this team and how it has been for decades.

Cutler is still a Bears’ fan at heart despite a bittersweet experience due to the polarizing nature of his personality and performances. He was truly a “love him or hate him” QB for the Chicago Bears from 2009 through 2016.

Now, he’s hoping Justin Fields receives resides more on the “love” end of that spectrum as the second-year QB leads the Chicago Bears into the future.
