Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave wasn’t exactly surprised when he got a call from the San Francisco 49ers at the start of free agency.
He was staggered, however, when he heard they were offering him a four-year, $84 million contract that would make him the third-highest-paid defensive tackle in the NFL.
“It really was shocking to me that they called me and asked me to come over here because a team like that doesn’t really pay somebody like me to come over here,” Hargrave told Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. “So, I was just happy to be a part of all these dogs over here. They got a lot of talent, too, and it’s just an easier transition.”
Hargrave is one of just four players on the 49ers roster—along with Trent Williams, Fred Warner and Arik Armstead—with a contract of $80 million or more. He’s only the fourth defensive player and just the second defensive lineman to land such a lucrative deal.
“We’ve never been a huge spend-in-free-agency club,” 49ers CEO Jed York said at the NFL Annual Meeting, via NBC Sports Bay Area. “That’s not really our belief. But when you’re going to spend in free agency, you better make it count, because you’re going to spend a lot of money.”

The 30-year-old Hargrave had his first Pro Bowl season in 2021, recording 63 pressures, 44 hurries, 7.5 sacks, nine tackles for loss and a forced fumble. He topped every one of those numbers in 2022, ranking second on the Eagles with 66 pressures, 48 hurries, 11.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss.
Hargrave joins the No. 1-ranked defense from 2022, bolstering a line that has Nick Bosa and Arik Armstead bookending the edges with a rotation that features 2020 first-round pick Javon Kinlaw, Kevin Givens, Kalia Davis and T.Y. McGill up the middle—all of which are at least 6 feet tall and weigh 285 pounds or more.
