Jaguars rookie QB Trevor Lawrence admits he was nervous in preseason debut

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence made his highly anticipated NFL preseason debut Saturday against the Cleveland Browns.

On his first play of the game, Lawrence was hit and fumbled the football. After the 23-13 loss, the Clemson product admitted he was quite nervous when he entered the game but quickly settled down after a few snaps.

"The first play you're a little bit, especially first game here in the NFL, you're a little bit nervous; but after that, you're just playing ball," Lawrence said, according to ESPN's Michael DiRocco. "Definitely felt that [comfort] setting in. I usually typically get nervous before the first game of any season anyway, so that's pretty standard. I was excited. I was ready to get out there. It's been a long time coming. It's been my dream."

The Jaguars said earlier this summer that Lawrence and Gardner Minshew are competing for the starting job. It's hard to see Minshew winning the competition, though, especially considering Lawrence outplayed him Saturday night.

Lawrence went 6-for-9 for 71 yards, while Minshew went 4-for-8 for 47 yards.

The Jaguars selected Lawrence first overall in this year's draft, and fans are excited to see what he can do. In fact, after Lawrence got married in April, Jags fans purchased items from his wedding registry, such as a toaster and vacuum cleaner.

If he continues making strides throughout the preseason, there's no reason to believe he won't be Jacksonville's starter come Week 1.
