Insider clears the air about top-ranked CB prospect's Pro Day hiccup

For ex-Georgia cornerback Kamari Lassiter, Wednesday's Pro Day was supposed to be another chance to shine for NFL scouts in hopes of improving his draft stock.

However, after word began to leak about a less-than-ideal 40-yard dash time, those hopes quickly turned to nightmares.

Luckily, Field Yates of ESPN offered some clarity, which should ease any concerns.

Initially, Dane Brugler of The Athletic and others reported via NFL scouts in attendance that Lassiter's 40 times clocked in at 4.63 and 4.61, a far cry from what Yields ultimately related.

If the first reported numbers had been accurate, it could have been a significant setback for Lassiter ahead of April's NFL Draft. While no one would confuse him for the fastest cornerback in the prospect pool, speed was considered an asset to his skillset.

Only two of the 30 cornerbacks who ran the 40-yard dash during this year's combine finished with times of 4.61 or below: Penn State's Kalen King (4.61) and Syracuse's Isaiah Johnson (4.64). Meanwhile, Lassiter did participate in on-field drills but opted out of running the 40.

Lassiter's corrected times don't put him near the elites in the category, like Nate Wiggins (4.28) of Clemson and Toldeo's Quinyon Mitchell (4.33), but they should eliminate at least one risk scouts might see.

This should be excellent news for the former Bulldogs standout, who, by all indications, impressed majorly at the combine in Indianapolis.

In his final season at Georgia, Lassiter recorded 37 tackles (3.8 for loss), eight passes defensed and an interception, earning second-team All-SEC honors. ESPN ranks him as the seventh-best available cornerback at one of the deepest positions in the draft and 44th overall.

Carrying a second-round grade, several teams could target Lassiter, including the Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers.
