Giants could target free agent safety to bolster unit
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Giants addressed various positions in the 2023 NFL Draft and acquired multiple free agents to help strengthen the roster and enhance the team’s athleticism across the board. However, after losing safety Julian Love, the team did not dedicate many resources to improving the position, with Bobby McCain being their primary acquisition.

McCain signed a one-year, $1.3 million deal with the Giants, including $652.5K guaranteed at signing. At such a low price point, he should provide reasonable value on a one-year contract. Last year, he recorded 76 combined tackles and defended five passes as a safety for the Washington Commanders. The only other safeties on the roster include Dane Belton, Jason Pinnock, Trenton Thompson, and Xavier McKinney. Big Blue also added Gervarrius Owens late in the draft last week, but we should not expect him to assume a starting role anytime soon.

Apart from McKinney, the strong safety position might be a weakness this upcoming season, suggesting a potential free-agent signing could be on the horizon. 25-year-old defensive back Nasir Adderley could be a suitable fit as a former second-round pick by the Los Angeles Chargers.

What would Nasir Adderley bring to the Giants?

Adderley’s rookie contract expired after the 2022 season, but he had a decent campaign, playing 884 total snaps and earning a 62.2 defensive grade, according to PFF. He has traditionally been a reliable run defender and a solid tackler, posting his best coverage grades last year with Los Angeles.

On over 20 targets, he allowed 13 receptions for a 65% catch rate, including 171 yards and one touchdown. He also notched two interceptions and two pass breakups, committing two penalties.

As a regular starter with plenty of experience, Adderley would offer the Giants more competition at a weak spot. Additionally, he is regarded as a free safety, having played 1941 reps at the position, compared to only 500 in the box at the strong safety alignment.

However, McKinney enjoys being close to the line of scrimmage, using his athleticism and aggression in the run game. A bit of versatility and youth could significantly enhance the unit. Adderley posted a career-low 12.5% missed tackle rate last year, which could still be improved.

Adderley has a calculated market value of $8.7 million per season, but that is unrealistic, considering All-Pro safety Jordan Poyer signed a deal averaging far less. Since he has not yet signed with a team, he might be waiting to capitalize on potential injuries to boost his contract expectations.

Nevertheless, he could be a solid target for the Giants if they lack confidence in their available talent at strong safety. However, at this point, I would lean toward Dane Belton as a potential starter, despite his struggles during his rookie season. The 22-year-old safety demonstrated solid tackling numbers but overall poor defensive grades. He needs to improve in run defense and showcase the hard-hitting nature he displayed at Iowa during his college career.
