Before Kevin Stefanski was hired as the Browns’ head coach, Cleveland had Freddie Kitchens.

During his time in Cleveland, he had a record of 6-10. Along with that poor record, some of the Browns’ players did not like Kitchens. In December of 2019, both Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. were caught on camera having shouting matches with Kitchens. And like both Landry and Beckham, it didn’t seem that Baker was a big fan of him.

In one game, Baker called Kitchens an idiot on the sidelines.

Despite everything that happened with that 2019 Browns team, Freddie Kitchens still gave Baker Mayfield some praise. It appears that he thinks Baker can still show off some of his potential. On SiriusXM Radio, Kitchens said,

“I am excited for him to get to Carolina and see what he can do. Things are looking up for Baker.”

Even though Baker had a poor season last year, Kitchens thinks that the biggest reason for that was the shoulder injury he suffered in week two.

Something else that he doesn’t believe helped Baker in his first four years is that he had a different coach every year until Stefanski’s hire.

“I think it’s definitely a factor when you start talking about different voices, different systems, different beliefs and philosophies. Playing quarterback, you have to have the same vision, and everything is your head coach and your coordinators. When that vision sometimes changes it’s definitely a detriment.”

The coaching change that Baker went through could not have helped. With learning new offensive schemes every year, it was probably difficult for him to adjust. Maybe he could find some consistency with the Panthers.

Kitchens also still says that the best part about Baker’s game is his passion for football.

“The difference between good-to-great and elite is sometimes the passion you bring towards the game. I would say that’s an attribute that he has, that’s not a detriment.”

Although their time in Cleveland did not work out how they wanted it to, it definitely seems like Freddie Kitchens has respect for Baker.
