Frank Reich texted Vikings' Kirk Cousins after comeback win over Colts

Former Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich messaged Kirk Cousins after the quarterback helped the Minnesota Vikings turn a 33-0 deficit into a historic 39-36 overtime win over Indianapolis on Saturday. 

"Frank texted me to say, 'Kirk, for 30 years, that moment has given me an opportunity to share many things about football and life, tell people about my faith, and now the torch has been passed to you,'" Cousins told NBC Sports' Peter King for Monday's "Football Morning in America" column. "So it was a powerful text. I already had a great deal of respect for Frank but after that text, it went through the roof. I took what he said seriously." 

Reich, who was fired by the Colts on Nov. 7, was referencing how he famously guided the Buffalo Bills back from a 32-point deficit to stun the Houston Oilers in a playoff game that occurred in January 1993. As noted by the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Minnesota is now responsible for the biggest comeback in NFL history that bettered Buffalo's mark by a single point thanks to Saturday's heroics. 

Reich admitted to King he was somewhat conflicted watching Saturday's events unfold because he still cheers on Indianapolis players and coaches he worked with through early November. 

"It’s just a weird dynamic," Reich explained. "And it was weird to see the record go away. It’s strange—I thought I was going to be clinging to the record, and it’s sort of an honor to have the record. But I am happy it’s Kirk." 

Per King, Reich "seemed especially pleased" that the signal-caller who holds the new record for the biggest comeback in league history "is also a religious person" as is the 61-year-old who has made it known he's eager to return to coaching. 

History aside, Saturday's victory was massive for a Minnesota side that improved to 11-3 and will enter the playoffs as the NFC North champions. The Vikings still have a chance to catch the Philadelphia Eagles (13-1) in the conference standings and next host the 8-5-1 New York Giants on the afternoon of Christmas Eve.
