Former MVP shares bold idea for Giants' QB room

New York Giants undrafted rookie quarterback and New Jersey native Tommy DeVito has become a fan favorite playing in place of injured starter Daniel Jones this fall. 

Retired signal-caller, one-time Most Valuable Player and current "The NFL Today" analyst Boomer Esiason thinks DeVito producing impressive performances over New York's final five games of the season could spark an interesting dilemma for the 4-8 Giants next summer. 

"What I want to see … I hope he plays his way into the hearts of the Giants fans and puts pressure on the coaching staff to have a little bit of a quarterback controversy at the beginning of next season," Esiason said about DeVito during Wednesday's edition of the WFAN "Boomer and Gio" program, per Ryan Chichester of Audacy. "Daniel Jones will feel that pressure … Knowing Daniel Jones, he will respond to that." 

Jones suffered a season-ending torn ACL on Nov. 5 and underwent surgery to address that issue on Nov. 22. The day before his procedure, Jones said during an appearance on the FanDuel TV "Up & Adams" program he could ultimately require a "10-month recovery period." Such a timeline likely would prevent him from being cleared to play by Week 1 next September. 

As for DeVito, he's thus far completed 66-of-105 total pass attempts for 697 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions. While he's added 83 rushing yards and a score on 21 carries, he's also taken a whopping 28 sacks. 

"He will want to get his job back and go out and play, and play well," Esiason added about how Jones would respond to being asked to compete with DeVito next summer. "From where I sit, I think it’s good for the Giants to have this happen." 

It's worth noting that DeVito could crash and burn as soon as after the Giants come off their bye with a Week 14 home game against the Green Bay Packers. If that happens, the Giants may find themselves in a position to land either USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams or Drake Maye of the North Carolina Tar Heels in next year's draft. 

Esiason is an outspoken supporter of DeVito and believes the 25-year-old "looks the part." That's all well and good, but anybody thinking DeVito has a realistic chance to be atop the Giants' depth chart 12 months from now should probably pump the brakes.
