Former DE Andre Carter Joining Raiders' Coaching Staff
Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

The Las Vegas Raiders are adding to an already impressive defensive coaching staff. Ian Rapoport said the Raiders will add another former player to their coaching staff. This time, they'll add former defensive end Andre Carter.

During his senior season at the University of California Berkley, Carter was a unanimous All-American. He was the 2000 Morris Trophy winner, awarded yearly to the Pac-10 conference's best defensive lineman. He was twice voted to the First-Team-All-Pac-10 team.

Carter was drafted seventh overall in the 2001 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Carter registered over 500 tackles, including 80 sacks and 18 forced fumbles during his 13-year career. He was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2011. Carter played in at least 15 games in nine of his 13 seasons and had two other seasons with over 12 games.

The former defensive end, now coach, spent time with five teams, including the New England Patriots and the Oakland Raiders. Carter will now bring his experience in the National Football League and a coach on various levels to Las Vegas to help get the most out of a talented defensive line.

As a coach, Carter quickly rose after starting as a graduate assistant at his alma mater. He'd spend a season with the Miami Dolphins as their assistant defensive line coach and the New York Jets as their defensive line coach. Carter coached most recently at Lousiana State University in 2021 as their defensive line coach, and he will now join the Raiders as a pass rush specialist.

The Raiders already have a formidable lineup of defensive linemen on their roster and could decide to add more this offseason. A defensive line that contains Maxx Crosby, Malcolm Koonce, Tyree Wilson, and any of the other interior defensive linemen the Raiders have, along with the right coaching and an offseason of preparation, could take Las Vegas' defense to another level.

The Raiders now have an even stronger defensive coaching staff than the one they already had, including Coach Antonio Pierce and Defensive Coordinator Patrick Graham. The Raiders are strategically filling their coaching staff with experienced coaches, many of whom also have playing experience in the league. Soon, they'll also begin to add to the defense on the field.

From February 27 to March 4, 2024, the NFL Scouting Combine will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently hold the No. 13 overall pick.
