Fixing The Titans Offensive Line, Two Players To Do It
USA TODAY Sports

NASHVILLE - Anyone who watched the Tennessee Titans for more than one game last season knows how poorly their offensive line play was in 2022. It was so bad that it brought back memories of and references to Will Svitek.

While newer fans of the Titans might not remember Svitek, there is a Youtube video of him for reference to what at that time seemed like the lowest of lows in offensive line play for the Titans.  Yet, somehow, the Titans reverted to 2014 form in a collapse that won't soon be forgotten in this city.

Part of the reason for such a poor unit rests with former general manager Jon Robinson and his drafting of offensive linemen during his tenure. The biggest miss was Isaiah Wilson in the first round in 2020.  Wilson was one of the biggest busts in league history and left a giant hole in a position of need for the franchise.

Then there was Dillon Radunz in 2022. While not a first-rounder, Radunz has yet to earn a regular starting role but showed signs of improvement last season.

The Titans selected Nicholas Petit-Frere in round three of last year's draft. The rookie started every game at right tackle. As expected, with a rookie, he had some struggles. Still, he played better than expected, considering how little help he was given because of Dennis Daley's struggles in replacing the injured Taylor Lewan on the left side.

Entering this season, with Lewan likely to be a cap casualty, along with Nate Davis being a free agent, and the possibility of Ben Jones retiring, new general manager Ran Carthon and head coach Mike Vrabel must rebuild the offensive line and the best method of doing that is in free-agency.

Many mock drafts have the Titans taking a left tackle in round one, which would be a solid selection, but can this team afford to go with a rookie at one of the most critical positions on the field?

Orlando Brown, considered the top left tackle in free agency, is coming off a Super Bowl championship with the Kansas City Chiefs. Should the Chiefs allow him to test the waters, the Titans would be wise to make a run at him.

Brown is only 26, has four Pro Bowls to his credit, and will come with hefty price tags, but then any good left tackle will cost.

Brown is not the only tackle that would be an excellent fit for the Titans. Mike McGlinchey, of the 49ers, a player Carthon is familiar with from their time together in San Francisco.

Entering his sixth season, McGlinchey is a big, physical right tackle who could form a strong tandem of tackles for the Titans and allow Petite-Frere to either move to guard, where some experts think he is better suited, or become a backup tackle.

Of course, these two will come at a high cost, but if it fixes the most significant issue on your team, wouldn't it be worth it to solve your biggest problem?
