Firing head coach, general manager will cost Raiders enormous amount of money

Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis slammed the reset button with his organization this week by firing head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler just a year and a half into their tenure with the team.

It is not only a hard reset for a team that seems to be going nowhere, it is also a series of moves that will cost Davis an enormous amount of money.

According to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter on Saturday, all of the Raiders' changes are going to cost Davis close to $85 million due to the amount of salary left on all of their contracts. The bulk of that money belongs to McDaniels who still has four and a half years of his original six-year contract remaining.

The fact that Davis is willing to take that much of a hit financially, while also having to pay a new full-time head coach and general manager starting next season, really drives home how unhappy he was with the direction of the team under the leadership of McDaniels and Ziegler.

The Raiders went 9-16 in 25 games under McDaniels, including a 3-5 record this season.

Interim coach Antonio Pierce is already the eighth different head coach the Raiders have had since the start of the 2011 season when Davis took over the team, and assuming a new full-time head coach is hired for the 2024 season that means he will have had nine new head coaches in a 14-year stretch.

It is very difficult to build a consistently winning football team with that much overhaul.

The only consistency with the Raiders under Davis's watch has been a lot of losing.
