Eagles WR DeVonta Smith reveals Super Bowl LVII regret

Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver DeVonta Smith still kicks himself over one moment from late in the 38-35 Super Bowl LVII loss to the Kansas City Chiefs this past February.

"The last catch I had," Smith told Scott Thompson of Fox News Digital about one play from the Super Bowl the 24-year-old wishes he could change. 

Philadelphia trailed Kansas City 35-27 with 5:45 remaining in regulation when Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts dropped back to throw at the Chiefs' 47-yard line. Hurts delivered what should've become a touchdown pass to an open Smith, but the receiver lost his footing short of the end zone and instead stumbled out of play at the 2-yard line.

Hurts scored a rushing touchdown on the next play, but the Chiefs responded with a drive that ended with Harrison Butker kicking a short field goal with just eight seconds left on the clock. Philadelphia's offense had no time to respond, and Smith still blames himself months after the fact. 

"If I went ahead and scored, we would’ve had more time when we had the ball on the last possession to go do some things that we needed to do," Smith lamented. 

The Eagles and Chiefs may find themselves on a collision course to meet for a second consecutive February. As of Monday afternoon, OddsChecker listed Kansas City as the overall betting favorite at +600 odds to win Super Bowl LVIII. Philadelphia was second on the list at +800. 

"Every year’s different," Smith said about the upcoming season. "We can’t sit up here and bank on what we did. It’s a new year, new team. No team is ever the same the following year, so we have to put together things the right way and try to get back to where we was and finish it the right way. We have to build on what we did, continue to do things the right way. We do things how we did last year, and do it even better, I think we’ll get to where we want to be."

Smith finished his first Super Bowl appearance with seven catches for 100 yards in the loss and a bad taste in his mouth he hopes to rinse away during the second month of 2024.
