Eagles' Lane Johnson: Carson Wentz will 'land with a great team' if Colts move on

Quarterback Carson Wentz simply did not do enough to guide what were once the 9-6 Indianapolis Colts to a playoff berth, as he under-performed in the season's final two games that the Colts lost to fall out of the postseason tournament.

Colts owner Jim Irsay and general manager Chris Ballard both suggested last month the team could look for an upgrade at the sport's most important position this offseason, and it's believed Indianapolis could release Wentz when the new league year opens on March 16 if the club can't find a trade partner before that date.

Per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk, Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson recently spoke about his former Philadelphia teammate during an appearance on "The Herd with Colin Cowherd" and said he believes the 29-year-old could reclaim his best form with a different employer such as the Pittsburgh Steelers, a team in need of a new QB1 following the retirement of future Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger.

"I think he’s going to — if he doesn’t stay with the Colts — he’s going to land with a great team," Johnson explained. "I heard you talking about Pittsburgh. I think he’d be a good pickup for them, just having the defense they have."

Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said Monday that career backup Mason Rudolph would be Pittsburgh's starter if the 2022 season began this week but later declared the club could add to its quarterback room "from the outside" via a trade or free-agency acquisition.

"I think he’ll get a shot somewhere," Johnson continued about Wentz. "I think this will be a point to where he can prove all the doubters wrong."

A report surfaced Wednesday that trade interest in Wentz around the NFL was "lukewarm" at that time. He may find he has to ultimately sign as a backup at a discounted price if the Colts give him his walking papers next month.
