Draft expert believes Cowboys are bullish on top RB prospect

ESPN draft expert Todd McShay believes Texas running back Bijan Robinson captivates the Cowboys, and they may move up to select him in the first round on April 27.

"They would love to bring the Texas star into Dallas and make him the star of their offense," McShay said Tuesday on "The Dan Patrick Show." Dallas is sitting at No. 26. It wouldn't shock me if they made a splash, jumped into the teens... and got Bijan around like (pick) 14, 15 or 16."

Trading up in the draft is a gamble, but it's worthwhile if the Cowboys can acquire Robinson.

He's McShay's top-ranked RB in the 2023 class and his second-best player overall. "Robinson has outstanding contact balance, and it almost always takes more than one defender to get him on the ground when he gets into space," he wrote of the 2022 Doak Walker Award winner.

Although the Cowboys have Pro Bowl RB Tony Pollard, his durability might be a concern after he suffered an ankle injury that required surgery in a divisional-round loss to the 49ers.

Dallas needs a back who can ease Pollard's workload, too. After recently releasing former Pro Bowler Ezekiel Elliott, the Cowboys signed Ronald Jones II, who only played in six games last season, so they must find another answer.

Robinson is similar to a prime Elliott since he has a blend of size (5-foot-11, 215 pounds), speed and versatility. In three seasons at Texas, Robinson scored 41 total TDs, tied with Pro Hall of Famer Earl Campbell for third-most in program history.

RB's stocks declined over the past decade, but the Cowboys should still target Robinson because he can become a game-changer for their offense.
