Dolphins left guard Isaiah Wynn sidelined by neck injury
USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Dolphins could be forced to replace yet another member of the team's starting offensive line for an extended stretch of the season.

A neck injury Isaiah Wynn suffered in the fourth quarter of Miami's win over the New York Giants forced the Dolphins to finish Sunday's game with Liam Eichenberg as the starting left guard.

If Wynn can't play in next Sunday's home game against the Carolina Panthers he'll be the second starting offensive lineman Miami's forced to do without because Terron Armstead was played on injured reserve this week because of a left knee injury he suffered in Miami's 48-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Armstead isn't eligible to return to the team until the Nov. 5 game against the Kansas City Chiefs, which will be played in London.

When Wynn could potentially return will likely be addressed on Monday when he's evaluated further.

Wynn and Eichenberg spent most of training camp competing for the starting spot Eichenberg held most of last season, when healthy. But Eichenberg lost the battle, partly because of a ribs injury he suffered in Miami's first exhibition game.

If Wynn can't play in the coming weeks the Dolphins will likely call on Eichenberg, a 2021 second-round pick, to start his 27th NFL game. Eichenberg started Miami's 48-20 loss to the Bills at center, replacing Connor Williams, and struggled signficantly.

The Dolphins could also open up the competition, allowing Lester Cotton and Robert Jones to compete with the former Notre Dame standout to replace Wynn.

Jones, who started nine games at left tackle last season, began this season on injured reserve because of an MCL sprain he suffered in his right knee, but he began practicing last week, which begins his three week window to return from injured reserve.

The Dolphins can activate Jones and play him in a game at any point over the next two weeks. But if he doesn't return by Oct. 23 from injured reserve he'll be forced to sit out the rest of the season.
