Detroit Lions Waiving Kicker Parker Romo
Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Detroit Lions have made a decision on placekicker Parker Romo.

After spending training camp in Detroit, the team has decided to ultimately waive the former XFL kicker, leaving Riley Patterson as the only kicker currently on Detroit's roster.

As the deadline approaches for teams to trim their rosters down to 53-man players, a report surfaced indicating the Lions are one of several NFL teams seeking an upgrade at the kicker position.

Throughout training camp, Romo showcased his booming leg, potentially giving him an opportunity to return on the practice squad.

The competition with Patterson was close throughout the early portion of camp, with Patterson demonstrating more experience and consistency as camp progressed.

According to The Athletic, the Lions were one of the teams “making calls" around the league looking to make a trade to bring in a new kicker.

Patterson, who many believed had secure footing, based on the coaching staff regularly praising his efforts to improve his leg strength, had a shaky performance in the third preseason game against Carolina

A missed kick and a missed extra point likely added some doubt regarding his reliability from distance.

Recall, the team has moved on from Patterson in the past.

"I feel like he's been pretty steady and reliable, and I think he just kind of had a rough one today," Dan Campbell explained to reporters after the preseason finale. "That's what I'm chalking it up to because he's really been on it I feel like for this training camp."
