Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes seem to be uncharacteristically split on a position of need
Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Detroit Lions rebuild has been moving along really well. One of the big reasons is that Lions' GM Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell have been in lockstep on the way that the team needs to be built. This week we learned that they may not be in lockstep on everything.

For the first time ever we got to see a little bit of separation between the two on whether or not cornerback is a need for the team after the sudden release of Cameron Sutton following the news of his arrest warrant.

Campbell was asked about the position on Monday and talked about how the Lions are exploring cornerback options in free agency and how the loss of Cameron Sutton presents some urgency to find someone who could play right away.

Then on Tuesday Brad Holmes was asked about the position and he said "it's not a need." He followed that up being talking about how you could never have enough cornerbacks and that he thinks it's always good business to acquire one.

So what happens here? Obviously this isn't indicative of Holmes and Campbell starting off some sort of situation where there's a growing disconnect between the two. But it certainly seems that bringing in one more cornerback is more important to one of them than it is the other.

It's easy to see it from both sides. From one angle the Lions just lost a starter and they need to replace that starter. From the other side the Lions just acquired two cornerbacks that can hold down starting spots and then they have some young players like Steven Gilmore and Khalil Dorsey who they might want to do more with.

The Lions will more than likely get another cornerback this year. Probably in the draft. Will that be early on or later. Holmes comments point to the possibility that the Lions won't look to draft a cornerback on day one. That's fine since this is a relatively deep cornerback class. We'll see what happens soon enough.
