Commanders discipline multiple players for alcohol-related issue

The Washington Commanders players celebrated the team’s win Monday night over the Philadelphia Eagles. The celebration started in the locker room and carried over to the flight home. However, for several players, celebrating comes with a price.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Commanders disciplined multiple players after videos on social media showed them drinking alcohol during the flight from Philadelphia. The social media videos showed quarterback Taylor Heinicke drinking Busch Light. Other players were also holding cans of adult beverages.

Commanders head coach Ron Rivera addressed the matter in a team meeting on Tuesday and reached out to inform the league the team disciplined the players involved. No NFL discipline is coming for the situation.

“The league reviewed the matter this week, and we’re satisfied with the discipline administered by the club,” an NFL spokesman said, per Pelissero.

The Commanders did not provide alcohol to the players.

News of the Commanders players’ discipline comes after Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing got arrested and charged with DUI Friday morning shortly after the Titans’ team plane landed following their win over the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night.

In light of the recent events, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell sent out a memo reminding teams that the league policy prohibits alcoholic beverages in the locker room, practice, office facilities or while traveling on team buses or planes. Goodell’s memo also threatened “significant discipline” for violators.
