Chiefs to sign former first-round draft pick Corey Coleman

Wide receiver Corey Coleman has found yet another opportunity to revive his stalled NFL career.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that the Kansas City Chiefs are signing Coleman.

The 27-year-old first entered the NFL when the Cleveland Browns selected him in the first round of the 2016 draft, but he mostly flopped across his first two pro seasons and was traded to the Buffalo Bills in the summer of 2018. However, the Bills released him that September before the start of regular-season play, and he later failed to find a long-term home with the New England Patriots before he caught on with the New York Giants.

Coleman made eight appearances with the Giants during the 2018 campaign and recorded five receptions for 71 yards. He tore his ACL during the Giants' first training camp practice of 2019 and missed the subsequent season and then spent a portion of the 2020 campaign on the Big Blue practice squad before he was suspended in January 2021 for a reported violation of the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs. He hasn't played since that ban.

As noted by KMBC News, the Chiefs have a history of taking fliers on reclamation projects such as Coleman and fellow receiver Josh Gordon, Coleman's former teammate with the Browns. In total, Coleman has 61 career catches for 789 yards and five touchdowns in just 27 games.
