Chargers agree to terms on five-year deal with former Patriots CB J.C. Jackson

Free agent cornerback J.C. Jackson didn't last long on the open market before he was scooped up by the Los Angeles Chargers on a five-year, $82.5 million deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Jackson, 26, was an undrafted free agent in 2018, but emerged as a starter early in his career with the New England Patriots. He's recorded an NFL-most 22 interceptions over the last three seasons with 17 of those picks coming in the last two years. Jackson also led the NFL in passes defensed in 2021 with 23.

The Chargers allowed the third most points in the NFL in 2021 and only seven teams recorded fewer interceptions. Jackson will be paired with 2021 second-round pick Asante Samuel Jr. in the Los Angeles secondary. The Chargers also have two-time Pro Bowler Derwin James at safety, who celebrated the addition of Jackson.

Los Angeles will be able to make the deal official when free agency begins Wednesday.
