Buffs in the NFL: Mason Crosby ready to kickstart his career in New York

Mason Crosby gets another opportunity in the NFL. The New York Giants announced the 16-year vet would be headed to the Meadowlands on Friday. An early Christmas gift for the 39-year-old, who wasn't re-signed by the Green Bay Packers to start the 2023 season.

The Los Angeles Rams had added Crosby to their practice squad in early December, but having spent his entire career kicking in colder temperatures, Mason ultimately chose the top job in New York. The Giants will have him replace Cade York, who became the third NY kicker on IR this season.

Crosby won a Super Bowl with the Packers and still holds the NFL record for most consecutive postseason field goals with twenty. He was only one of seven two-time, first team All-American players in CU history. A decorated career with 33 total records from 2003-06. Most notably, he holds the title of all-time leading scorer in the 134-year history of the program with 307 points.

Crosby took his experience at CU and translated that into a storied career in Green Bay. He's currently ranked 11th in NFL history for points with 1918 career points. Only seven players have cracked the 2K mark, but none are active.

There's a good case to make that Crosby could be the next Colorado Buffaloes player to be inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. As it sits currently, Cliff Branch is the only former Buffs alum to be enshrined in Canton.

Crosby and the Giants try to play the role of spoilers with an NFC East game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Christmas Day at 4:30 p.m. ET. The team from the city of Brotherly Love is tied with the Dallas Cowboys atop the standings at 10-4 and are riding a three-game losing streak. Santa himself couldn’t have dreamed up a better scenario for Crosby.
