Browns LBs Anthony Walker, Sione Takitaki Not Ready, Why They Aren't on the PUP List
USA TODAY Sports

The Cleveland Browns didn't place anyone on their Physically Unable to Perform List ahead of training camp. That's good news as it pertains to linebackers Anthony Walker Jr. (quad) and Sione Takitaki (knee) relative to their recoveries from injuries, but they also aren't practicing for the time being.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski was asked about the pair ahead of Sunday's practice.

"They're both coming off different injuries, so per doctors and per trainers, recommendations will bring them along in different ways. For now, they'll be off to the side getting some work and then in these walkthroughs and those type of things are great for them to get some "live" reps, but we'll see how it goes. And that's the nice part of having a little bit longer training camp, give them some time to get ready."

Stefanski did not provide a timeline for the recovery of either player, which begs the question why they Browns chose not to place them on the PUP list. After all, that would free up additional roster spots for players they can get a look at in training camp.

Whether they're back in a week or a month, the Browns view those walkthrough reps as important for both players. If they were on the PUP list, they would be unable to take part in those. The physical component is important, but that's mostly attached to their recovery. For Walker and Takitaki, getting as many mental reps, seeing how the defense is going to operate becomes important.

Particularly if they are going to be available into the second half of August, they need to be able to step in and know how to do their job. They will still be focusing on the physical element, gaining strength and endurance, but they don't want them to also be woefully behind in understanding the scheme. Certainly, they have access to film and will be able to watch it from the sideline, but feeling it out even if it's just a walkthrough pace could be valuable.

It also suggests the Browns aren't concerned about their linebacker depth. They like who they have. That doesn't stop them from making a move, but the organization feels good about the players they have at that position.

It's not clear when either player will be back on the field. The fact they aren't on the PUP list would also hint both players are technically healthy, but not in football shape. That means they need to continue to build their bodies back from the injuries each suffered to prevent a setback or a different injury caused by overcompensating.

That would be similar to the approach the Browns took with Amari Cooper after his core muscle surgery, who is now ready to fully participate in training camp.
