Brock Purdy's MVP odds shorten after Week 5 win

Boy, has the conversation about Brock Purdy changed.

The young San Francisco 49ers QB attracted plenty of speculation ahead of the 2023 NFL season. Critics called him overrated, claiming his 2022 rookie showing was a flash in the pan. Fast forward through Week 5 of the 2023 season, however, and last season's Mr. Irrelevant is garnering some serious MVP hype.

So what do sportsbooks think of Purdy after his performance against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night?

Not surprisingly, Purdy's odds of winning league MVP significantly shortened after he led the 49ers to a 42-10 smackdown of the Cowboys. The Iowa State product now has the third-shortest odds at DraftKings to win MVP at 7-1.

That's a pretty significant jump from a week ago when fellow QBs such as Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson had better odds of winning the end-of-the-season honors. Now, only Patrick Mahomes (9-2) and Tua Tagovailoa (19-4) have shorter odds at DK following Week 5.

Purdy threw for 252 yards with a whopping four TDs against Dallas, which helped propel the Niners to their 11th home win against the Cowboys. In addition to handing Dallas its second-largest defeat in Mike McCarthy's tenure as head coach, Purdy also improved to 10-0 as a regular-season starter.

San Francisco will look to stay perfect yet again in Week 6 when they play the Browns in Cleveland. DK already has the Niners listed as five-point favorites to win that game.
