Bill Belichick's sons have offers to return to Patriots

Bill Belichick may be gone from the New England Patriots franchise, but there could still be two members of the family with the organization during the 2024 season.

In a report Monday morning, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated wrote that both of the 71-year-old's sons have already been offered jobs to remain as part of new head coach Jerod Mayo's staff.

"And, just to wrap this up, one other thing worth noting is that Belichick’s sons, defensive play-caller and linebackers coach Steve, and safeties coach Brian, have both already been offered the opportunity to return to the team for 2024," the report said. "Mayo and the elder son (Steve) have grown close as they’ve collaborated to run the Patriots’ defense the past five years."

Of course, there's always a chance that the three-time AP Coach of the Year lands a new gig this winter and both of his sons follow him to the city.

Steve Belichick has been a defensive assistant with New England since 2012, earning three Super Bowl rings with the franchise. Brian Belichick has been in his role since 2020, a stretch that has seen the team make the playoffs only once.

Breer also had an update on how Patriots owner Robert Kraft may allow Mayo to deal with the rest of the coaching staff, including offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien.

"As for staff, I’d expect the Krafts to empower Mayo to fill out the staff as he sees fit, with some coaches likely to follow Belichick, and for Mayo to conduct a full search for an offensive coordinator," he wrote. "While it’ll likely include incumbent Bill O’Brien, who could also wind up going with Belichick, I think the Patriots are going to be very open-minded in trying to find the right guy for what’ll probably be Mayo’s most important hire."

Mayo, a former All-Pro and Pro Bowl linebacker who spent his entire eight-year playing career with the Patriots was hired to replace Belichick on Friday. At 37 years old, he's now the youngest head coach in the NFL.
