Bears starter still in concussion protocol on Wednesday
Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Bears are prepping to potentially be without one of their key offensive starters against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 16.

Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said on Wednesday that starting offensive guard Teven Jenkins remains in concussion protocol after leaving the game early in Week 15 against the Cleveland Browns.

Jenkins will have until the end of the week to clear protocol although that outcome has proven to be unlikely based on the league's concussion policies in 2023.

If Jenkins is unable to go on Sunday against the Cardinals, the Bears will be expected to start offensive lineman Cody Whitehair. Whitehair replaced Jenkins in Week 15 after the third-year offensive guard left the game.

Whitehair had a few hiccups but also a few decent looking plays in relief of Jenkins last week. Although, the overall performance wasn’t promising and similar to how his play has been throughout much of the season.

Whitehair had a solid block on this play that helped spring running back Roschon Johnson free for a solid gain.

But he also had this disaster of a play on a pass blocking rep where it appears he had no clue what his assignment even was. The worst part is that the play nearly ended with his quarterback taking a big shot from a Browns defender.

Whitehair started for the Bears at left guard from Weeks 1-5 while Jenkins was on the injured reserve to start the season. Jenkins was active in Week 5 and ended up replacing Whitehair during the game and started at the position in Week 6 while Whitehair filled in at center. From Weeks 7-10, Jenkins started at right guard allowing Whitehair to return playing at left guard.

However, over the past 4 games, Jenkins returned to left guard and Whitehair was sent back to the bench. So far, Whitehair has had his worst season of his career according to Pro Football Focus, which has him listed with a 43.1 overall grade in 2023.

Whitehair has struggled blocking in the run game and in pass protection throughout the season. The eight-year veteran has allowed three sacks, 19 pressures, and four QB hits throughout the season at both guard and center.

Having him potentially back in the starting lineup on Sunday could affect the Bears offense in a negative way against the Cardinals. The Bears could also consider using offensive lineman Dan Feeney, although even he's only played 43 snaps in 2023.
