Bears QB Justin Fields seems to call out coaching staff amid struggles

The Bears continue to grow more dysfunctional after an 0-2 start, with third-year quarterback Justin Fields calling out the coaching staff.

"I definitely felt like I was robotic and not playing like myself [in a Week 2 loss against Tampa Bay]," Fields said in a Wednesday news conference. "You know, could be coaching, I think. They're doing their job when they're giving me what to look at, but at the end of the day, I can't be thinking about that when the game comes."

Through the season's first two games, the former first-round pick has yet to prove he's the Bears' answer at QB. He's completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 427 yards, two TDs, three interceptions and a 22.2 QBR, 31st in the league.

Moreover, he's looked hesitant on the field. Per Next Gen Stats, his average TT (time to throw) is 2.98 seconds, the fifth-slowest in the league.

However, some of Fields' problems tie to him running less. The Bears have only called four designed runs in two games, via Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus. Perhaps the 24-year-old QB is frustrated the coaching staff took one of his strengths away.

"My goal this week is to say 'F it — just play football,'" Fields said. "That's when I play my best when I'm out there being free. I'm going to go out there and be me."

The Bears have tallied 547 yards through two games, the sixth-fewest in the NFL. While it's clear offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and head coach Matt Eberflus must design better plays, Fields shouldn't have called them out publicly.

Franchise QBs are expected to remain steady when teams hit roadblocks. Also, Fields should resolve the disconnect with the coaching staff.
