Atlanta Falcons Sign Star Pass Rusher Coming Out Of Double Retirement
Kena Krutsinger-USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Falcons are signing a defensive tackle who has retired from the team twice in two seasons. The Falcons are hoping to improve their pass rush for the upcoming season. The Falcons need help at the defensive end position, but they could have an extra boost in the interior part of the line.

Eddie Goldman comes out of retirement

According to Ian Rapoport with the NFL Network, Eddie Goldman is coming out of retirement to sign with the Falcons. Rapoport called Goldman a former Falcons’ “standout,” but Rapoport could only be referencing Goldman’s off-the-field antics as a standout.

The Atlanta Falcons have seen this show before

Goldman hasn’t played a down with the Falcons. According to Aaron Wilson with KPRC, the Falcons released Goldman from the reserve/left squad list.

Per Mike Fisher with Sports Illustrated, Goldman was placed on the list after being listed with the team for two seasons without ever participating in practice:

“The Atlanta Falcons are ending their rather mysterious relationship with defensive lineman Eddie Goldman as he has been placed on the “exempt/left squad list” after being associated with the team for two seasons … without ever having even taken a practice snap.”

Then head coach Arthur Smith said he had no intentions of bringing Goldman back after the 2023 season. Goldman signed with the Falcons in July of 2022 but retired after thirteen days with the team. He came out of retirement in March of 2023 until he decided to retire again in July.

Goldman played well for the Chicago Bears

Goldman was a rookie standout for the Bears in 2015 when he recorded 4.5 sacks. He has 13 sacks in his NFL career. Goldman has a history of missing seasons. He sat out the 2020 season due to Covid-19.
