Another Cowboys' free agent could get swiped by one of their biggest rivals
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Commanders have come into the 2024 NFL free agency frenzy with a clear gameplan: Target Dallas Cowboys free agents.

Dan Quinn's team has reportedly agreed to terms with DE Dorance Armstrong and C Tyler Biadasz already, two key players from the Cowboys' 12-wins team of 2023.

They might not be done adding Cowboys to the team.

According to ESPN reporter John Kleim, it "sounds like the Commanders have shown interest" in cornerback Jourdan Lewis, who started eight games for Dallas in 2023.

Despite being relatively small in size, Lewis fits what Quinn is looking for in a nickel cornerback. He's physical and feisty and won't shy away from making tough tackles in the run game. That's key for a Commanders defense that will spend mostly play single-high coverages and load the box.

After giving it up himself in 2022 due to a nasty foot injury, Lewis regained control of the slot last year after Trevon Diggs went down injured. He got better as the season went along and showed he's a starting caliber nickel in the league.

Among the 75 cornerbacks with the most snaps, Lewis ranked 13th-best in missed tackle percentage, per PFF. In several spots, particularly late in the year, he came up with huge TFLs in high-stakes scenarios like near the goal line.

He's also set to be an inexpensive addition to whoever targets him in free agency. We'll see if he lands in Washington or not but Lewis definitely sounded ready to leave Dallas after the team's playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers when he talked to reporters.

"I mean, it's life, you know," Lewis said when asked about his impending free agency in 2024. " It hurts that we lost like that. So, and you know, I won't get to be, I might not be a part of this next year, so it kind of hurts."
