Aaron Rodgers trade at a standstill, sides locked in a 'standoff'

We fully expect an Aaron Rodgers trade from the Green Bay Packers to the New York Jets to be completed at some point before the 2023 NFL Draft gets going late next month.

But to this point, things are not trending in that direction. While the four-time NFL MVP has noted he wants to play for the Jets next season, Green Bay and New York remain at odds in trade talks.

The Jets feel like they’re offering a lot. The Packers feel like they’re not offering enough, and the two sides are left at a stand-still.”

Green Bay is said to be demanding a first-round pick and change for the future Hall of Fame quarterback. New York has apparently pushed back against sending its first-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft (13th overall) as part of a package for Rodgers.

Assuming that Green Bay backs off of its current asking price, the Jets have other big-time assets they can offer up to the Packers.

New York just acquired a second-round pick (42nd overall) from the Cleveland Browns for Elijah Moore. Perhaps the Jets can offer that up with their original second-round selection (43rd overall). Looking at various NFL Draft trade value charts, that’s the equivalent of the 17th pick in the draft. Even this might be a bit too much for a 39-year-old quarterback who is not committed to playing beyond the 2023 season.

There’s been some who believe that New York needs to offer up one of its second-round picks this spring and a conditional early-round selection in 2024.

The idea here would be for said pick to tie in with Rodgers’ performance and how the Jets do in 2023. Said selection would turn into a first-rounder if New York wins the AFC title.

Either way, it’s becoming pretty obvious that the Jets and Packers are not in lockstep right now. Whoever blinks first will likely help facilitate a trade actually crossing the finish line before the upcoming NFL Draft.
