49ers to activate Ray-Ray McCloud, play him vs. Rams
Jeremy Reper-USA TODAY Sports

Head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that the San Francisco 49ers plan to activate wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud from the injured reserve list, a move likely to occur on Saturday. This decision ensures the team will have their special teams returner back in time for the playoffs, providing a significant boost for that unit.

On Friday, when about the plan for McCloud, Shanahan said, "It's a technicality, but we've already made the decision. He'll be up."

San Francisco must also make a corresponding move to create space for McCloud on the 53-man roster. Shanahan didn't disclose the specific move, mentioning that the coaches haven't spoken to the affected player yet.

Six 49ers players have been ruled out for Sunday's regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Rams—defensive tackle Arik Armstead (foot, knee), safety Ji'Ayir Brown (knee), tight end Ross Dwelley (ankle), safety Tashaun Gipson (quadricep), running back Christian McCaffrey (calf), and cornerback Ambry Thomas (hand).

Additionally, Brock Purdy will not play in the Week 18 contest, allowing the quarterback to rest ahead of the playoffs. The coach also confirmed that tackle Trent Williams would play on Sunday, a detail first revealed by general manager John Lynch on Friday morning.

Shanahan informed reporters that cornerback Jason Verrett suffered a torn rotator cuff in practice and will undergo season-ending surgery.
