Quarterback Brock Purdy has led the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl LVIII. Despite the magnificent feat, the NFL pro bowler continues to have a “game-manager” tag. With the critics getting louder, the 49ers legend Joe Montana finally voiced his opinion on the whole controversy. He gave an interesting take on Brock Purdy’s role in the Niners’ success.

If there’s anyone who has earned the well-deserved right to have a say on the importance of a quarterback in leading San Francisco to its glory, it’s Montana. The four-time Vince Lombardi Trophy winner retired from the NFL in 1994. He had 35,124 passing yards, 244 passing touchdowns, and 2,929 completions.

His former team will compete for Super Bowl glory on February 11 against the Kansas City Chiefs, Montana addressed the famous ‘game-manager’ comment by Cam Newton during his appearance on ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show

The thing I see [with Brock Purdy] is something that I figured out early on in my career --  what the offense is about. It wasn’t about me. It was about getting the ball to the people who knew what to do with it. He understands what his position is. He doesn’t try to make a big play. He knows when that chance will come and when he needs to do it, but in most cases, it’s okay to puntJoe Montana via Pat McAfee Show

The Hall of Famer quarterback shared that by the end of his career, he only focused on getting the ball to John Taylor, Jerry Rice, Brent Jones, and Roger Craig . He also appreciated the Niners’ second-year quarter for understanding the offense so early in his career.

Joe Montana sees a reflection of himself in Brock Purdy

While talking about many of Purdy’s qualities, Montana also praised him for remaining calm on the field. It was because he understood his role as the quarterback and worked on excelling in it. Montana continued:

He has a great presence and he’s not trying to knock you out with the football. He delivers a great, catchable ball.

The 64-year-old legend revealed how he glimpsed himself in the young Niners’ quarterback. So far, Purdy has thrown for 5,654 yards and 44 touchdowns in his two seasons as a starter.

Purdy knows the gravity of coach Kyle Shanahan’s solid star-studded offense, and that’s why, when he’s on the field, he works on passing the ball to Brandon Aiyuk , Deebo Samuel , and George Kittle .
