49ers announce roster moves ahead of clash with Cowboys
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers have promoted two players to the active roster ahead of the team's game against the Dallas Cowboys. Both players are from the team's practice squad.

DL Austin Bryant and CB Kendall Sheffield have been elevated to the active roster, both for the second time this season. Bryant spent his first four seasons with the Detroit Lions, before signing with the 49ers back in March. So far this season, Bryant has been signed, released, and signed multiple times. He will step in for Kerry Hyder, Jr., whom the club released Friday to make room for Randy Gregory. Bryant has only played in one game so far this season, the opener in Pittsburgh.

Sheffield was drafted in 2019 and has appeared in 38 games. He has started 20 games, all with the Atlanta Falcons. Last week, against the Arizona Cardinals, Sheffield recorded three tackles, including a tackle for loss. With Samuel Womack still on injured reserve, the 49ers are a little thin at the corner position and need the depth Sheffield provides.

On Friday, the 49ers acquired Gregory in a trade with the Denver Broncos. The 49ers are sending Denver a 2024 sixth-round draft pick in exchange for Gregory and a 2024 seventh-round draft pick. With the 49ers figuring on having a late pick in each round, and Denver likely having an early selection in each round, the difference in the two picks could potentially be only a handful of spots.

The former Dallas pass rusher will not be with the team on Sunday but will arrive in Santa Clara on Monday.
