The Wizards interviewed Sixers assistant coach Sam Cassell on Tuesday in what is likely to be part of a thorough process to find their next head coach. Fred Katz of The Athletic was the first to report that Cassell’s interview took place.
Sources told FortyEightMinutes late last week that Cassell emerged as a leading candidate for the position. Washington is searching for a new head coach after five seasons with Scott Brooks and the front office has vowed patience as it looks to identify the right fit.
GM Tommy Sheppard wouldn’t put a timeline on finding a new coach.
“Patience is a competitive advantage.”

Cassell got his coaching start with the Wizards, serving as an assistant from 2009-2014, including Bradley Beal‘s first two years in the league. He and Beal remain close and the former point guard is well respected in NBA circles.
Washington has already conducted an interview with Celtics assistant Scott Morrison and the team plans on interviewing Dallas’ Jamahl Mosley. Nuggets assistant Wes Unseld Jr. remains in the mix, though it’s unclear when an interview will take place.
