Victor Wembanyama Says He’s Immune To Distractions, Doesn’t Drink Or Smoke

Following the end of a historic rookie campaign, Spurs center Victor Wembanyama explained why he’s different from your typical rising star. As Victor explained, he’s “immune” to petty distractions and doesn’t bother with things like partying, drinking, or smoking.

“[I feel like I'm immune to all the bad things] like distractions like partying, alcohol, drugs,” said Victor via The Ringer. “Why would I ever do that?… I don't have nothing to compensate for."

Victor just completed his rookie season without any dirt, chaos, or controversy. Since stepping into the NBA spotlight, Wemby has said all the right things and has demonstrated the kind of work ethic and desire to win that every team loves to see from their franchise player.

While most other players like to indulge in their guilty pleasures through drugs or sex, Victor likes the quiet life and he prefers to stay home and rest over trying to look for a good time in the streets. While this approach is not for every player, Victor has found the perfect balance and he couldn’t be on a team better suited to his personality.

Like Wemby, the Spurs are a team that likes to keep things professional and they are always in the business of trying to win at any cost. As the former home to stars such as Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard, the Spurs already have a history of success with guys like Victor, who are quiet, humble, and strictly business. It's just a shame that the Spurs couldn’t do more to surround their star with the proper supporting cast this season.

Victor Wembanyama Will Not Be Patient

While Victor was the clear and obvious winner for Rookie of the Year, the Spurs had a pretty forgettable season overall. In fact, at just 22-60, San Antonio finished 14th in the West and nowhere near the play-in picture. Victor expressed his frustration all season long and there is growing pressure on the team to take action this summer, even if it's not coming from Wemby himself.

“I’ve received some messages,” Wembanyama said. “Even from prospects. But I try to sustain my role. It’s a whole new world that I’m eager to discover. For sure, one day or the other, I’ll have to be involved in this, I guess, even though I’m staying in my role as a player.”

The Spurs cannot continue to let Victor’s incredible talent be used in vain. With a generational player that showed growth every new month, Wembanyama is the future of the Spurs and they cannot waste another second.

The problem is, besides Victor and maybe someone like Tre Jones, the Spurs don't have any keepers on this team. To turn the ship around, GM Brian Wright will need to be aggressive in using the team’s assets to improve the roster from top to bottom.

While it’s still too early to say, multiple players have been rumored targets for the Spurs and the list includes Klay Thompson, Trae Young, and Dejounte Murray among others. The Spurs have big ambitions with Victor and the race is on to build something that he can lead to glory.
