Thoughts on the Hawks finally trading John Collins

Yesterday was an unfortunate day for the Atlanta Hawks faithful. Whether you wanted John Collins traded or not, the fact that he was moved for pennies compared to what the Hawks could have received for him a few years ago is bad business.

In the trade, the Hawks acquired Rudy Gay and a measly second-round pick. That’s not to say it was a bad move; however, given how Collins has played over the last two seasons and the remaining three years and $78 million left on his contract. The Hawks needed to shed salary if they wanted to make any additions this offseason. They did that in this deal. How it should be judged is by what Landry Fields and company do next. As currently constructed, the Hawks are far from a championship roster, but they do have some promising young trade chips and newly acquired money to spend.
