Rico Hines to join 76ers as an assistant coach

The Philadelphia 76ers coaching staff continued to take shape with another addition on Wednesday.

Rico Hines, a former assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors, will join the 76ers on Nick Nurse's coaching staff as an assistant, according to a Wednesday tweet from ESPN Senior NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski.

"Rico Hines is joining the 76ers as an assistant on Nick Nurse's coaching staff, sources tell ESPN," Wojnarowski wrote. "Hines had been a part of Nurse's staff with the Raptors. Hines is a former player development coach who has worked his way to a front-of-the-bench assistant."

Nurse was hired to become the Sixers' new head coach in May. He served as the head coach of the Raptors from 2018-23. The former Rio Grande Valley Vipers head coach helped guide Toronto to a record of 227-163 and three playoff appearances during his time in Toronto.

The 76ers coaching staff started to take shape when they hired Bobby Jackson as an assistant coach on Sunday. He was the head coach of the Stockton Kings, Sacramento's G League affiliate, from 2021-22, according to the National Basketball Coaches Association.

Hines announced he would join the Raptors in an Instagram post last July. He has experience as an assistant coach with the Sacramento Kings from 2019-22 before he moved on to Toronto.

Hines can be a fantastic addition if he can continue the development of 22-year-old guard Tyrese Maxey and some of the team's other younger options. Nurse spoke highly of the former Golden State Warriors Player Development Coach in September.

"He's as good as there is in the business in player development," said Nurse of Hines, via All Raptors. "Guys, trust him. He can command an entire gym, not with just one player, but with 60 in it, sometimes, and he has a deep, deep passion for the game."
