Newly signed Gabe York available to be active for Indiana Pacers final three games

The Indiana Pacers signed guard Gabe York to a two-way contract last week, but he has not suited up for the team yet due to a rule governing two-way deals in 2022-23.

Players who are on such contracts are only permitted to be active for 50 of a team's 82 games in one NBA season. That ratio applies to a two-way player inked at any point during a campaign, so if a player is signed to a two-way contract halfway through the season, they can only suit up 25 times.

For York, that means he can only be active for the Pacers three times this season since he was signed with five games remaining on the schedule. "I believe he's only available for three of the last five games," Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle said last week, citing the proportion of games a two-way player can be active for.

Indiana has battled the Thunder and Cavaliers in the time since signing York, and the 29-year old was inactive for both games. That means he is eligible to be active, and possibly play, for Indiana in their final three games. If he gets playing time will be the first new player to rock the blue and gold since George Hill in February.

"Gabe York is going to be active [going forward]. I'll tell you that... he has three games that we can use him, and we wanted to hold off unless we needed him in one of the previous games," Carlisle said on Sunday after his team played the Cavaliers.

York played for the Pacers in 2021-22 as a rookie. He got a late-season opportunity with the franchise last year, and in two games he averaged 4.0 points and 2.0 assists per game. He has been an excellent scorer for the Pacers G League affiliate team, the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, in recent seasons.

"Excited for the opportunity. Thankful to the Pacers organization for giving me another chance," York said last week. "I'm just looking forward to getting out there and being able to play."
