NBA Insider Reveals Team-Friendly Contract Details for Mavs’ AJ Lawson

Although the Dallas Mavericks are currently surrounded by negativity due to losing five out of their last six games, there is at least a little positive light that can be shed thanks to an underrated roster move that was made over the weekend.

On Sunday, the Mavs announced that they converted 23-year-old guard AJ Lawson’s two-way contract to a standard NBA contract, and today, we now know the team-friendly details of his new deal.

According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the Mavs have signed Lawson to a four-year contract worth a total of $7.9 million, with only the first year of the contract being guaranteed.

“The Dallas Mavericks signed AJ Lawson to a four-year, $7.9 million contract, which is fully guaranteed this season and non-guaranteed the following three seasons, league sources told @hoopshype,” Scotto posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“It’s something I’ve been preparing for my whole life,” Lawson said after earning his new contract. “I have this saying of mine: beat the odds. I’ve been doing that ever since I was in high school – proving myself right and proving the doubters wrong. This is like another milestone in my career and I’m super-blessed to be here as a Dallas Maverick, as a roster player.

“My next goal is to try to get in the rotation, try to help my team win. I went from a two-way to a roster spot and now the next goal is to keep building, keep grinding and get better and showing the team I’m ready when my time is called.”

Given how badly the Mavs have struggled lately, Lawson might just be a spark the team needs. We’ll see just how willing head coach Jason Kidd is to shakeup his lineups against the Miami Heat on Thursday night.
