Milwaukee Bucks make first round of cuts to trim roster down for opening night
USA TODAY Sports

With opening night looming on the horizon, the Milwaukee Bucks have begun trimming down their roster, waiving forward Drew Timme, guard Jazian Gortman, and two-way guard Omari Moore on Wednesday.

Mild surprise

According to Van Fayaz of Brew Hoop, Moore being let go was a mild surprise. Although the Bucks already have a bevy of guards on the roster led by seven-time All-NBA member Damian Lillard and experienced backup Cam Payne, having another guard on the roster would have been a good insurance policy.

“He had his moments in Summer League back in July, and his 6’6” length plus collegiate point guard experience made him an interesting prospect if a longshot. He seemed likely to be a regular feature with the Wisconsin Herd in the G League season ahead. However, Moore saw no action in the first three preseason games and only made his “debut” last night with five scoreless minutes, his only contribution being one rebound,” Fayaz wrote.

NCAA legend waived

Drew Timme, the former Gonzaga star, will have to find another path to the big league after the Bucks waived him. Though the 6-foot-10 big man had his moments in the preseason, including the go-ahead putback during the team’s win over the Chicago Bulls, the Bucks ultimately decided to part ways with him.

After a stellar college career that saw him average 21.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists during his senior season at Gonzaga, the former All-America selection had been pegged as an intriguing prospect who could potentially carve out a spot on Milwaukee’s roster this season. However, Timme could play in the G League if the Bucks designate him as an affiliate player.
