Miami Heat’s Duncan Robinson Makes NBA History vs. Pistons

Miami Heat forward Duncan Robinson had quite the winding path to the NBA. He started off playing Division III basketball before transferring and playing for three seasons at Michigan. Robinson would go undrafted in the 2018 NBA Draft before being signed by Miami.

It didn’t take long for him to become part of the team’s rotation. By Year 2, he was an integral part of the game plan as an elite 3-point shooter. He made 44.6 percent of his 3-point attempts during the 2019-20 campaign and 270 total.

The following season, he was once again hot from 3-point range. He made 40.8 percent of his attempts and 250 total, cementing his status as one of the better shooters in the NBA. After that campaign, the Heat rewarded him with a five-year, $90 million contract extension.

The following season, he stayed hot, making 232 attempts. But, his efficiency waned, as he made only 37.2 percent of his attempts. With his jump shot faltering, Robinson’s standing in Miami was becoming unsteady.

During the 2022-23 season, he found himself out of the rotation for chunks of time as he also battled injuries. He shot 37.1 percent from the field and 32.8 percent from 3-point range, rendering him virtually unplayable as he wasn’t making a positive impact defensively.

His name was brought up in trade rumors, but the market wasn’t hot for a sharpshooter who had lost his shooting touch. But, that has ended up being a blessing in disguise for the Heat, as Robinson has turned things around this season.

He has recaptured his shooting stroke, knocking down 40.6 percent of his attempts. Robinson is no longer a one-trick pony, showcasing more of an offensive repertoire outside of just perimeter shooting. He has already set a career-high for assists despite having 20 more games to play this season.

Alas, it is his 3-point shooting that is still his calling card and what opposing NBA teams worry about most when making game plans. That is understandable, as Robinson made history last time out.

Against the Detroit Pistons, Robinson knocked down 7-of-12 3-point attempts, surpassing the 1,000-make mark for his career. As shared by NBA History on X, Robinson is now the fastest player to that plateau, needing only 343 games, surpassing the previous record of 350 held by Luka Doncic.
