Los Angeles Lakers’ Anthony Davis Admits Thinking His Eye Was Torn Open After Painful Injury
Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

Anthony Davis’ status for Monday’s showdown against the Atlanta Hawks was initially in question after the eye injury he suffered during their Saturday meeting with the Golden State Warriors. Fortunately, AD was able to recover in time for their latest outing,

However, it was certainly not easy for Davis, and the injury he dealt with was quite a painful one.

Los Angeles Lakers’ Anthony Davis Suffers Eye Injury

For those who missed it, Davis sustained a left eye injury during the first quarter of the Warriors game. Dubs rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis was trying to block AD’s layup attempt under the rim, but as his hand went down, it accidentally hit the Lakers star in the face–with his elbow connecting to Davis’ left eye.

The All-Star big man was able to continue in the game for a bit, but he was taken out after the first quarter and never returned. The Lakers called his injury a corneal abrasion, with reports noting that his injured eye was really swollen.

Without Davis, the Lakers’ 36-30 lead that they built in the first quarter quickly disappeared. The Warriors went on to outscore them 98-85 for the rest of the showdown to take away the 128-121 victory.

Following the battle, the Lakers said that Davis’ condition will be monitored for the next couple of days leading up to the Hawks contest. AD was listed as questionable but was eventually given the greenlight to play.

Davis’ presence proved to be beneficial for the Lakers, as the nine-time All-Star dropped 22 points on top of 15 rebounds, six assists, two steals and one block. He had the best rating in the plus-minus box score with +28, which speaks volume of how impactful he is to the Purple and Gold.

Los Angeles Lakers’ Anthony Davis Opens Up on Eye Injury

Speaking to reporters post-game, however, Davis opened up on what he went through after sustaining his eye injury. Looking at his Monday performance, it certainly looked like he was not coming off a painful injury.

Nonetheless, AD emphasized that he was really hurt after the corneal abrasion, adding that he actually thought his left eye was torn apart.

“[It] was actually right in the middle of my eye … I thought my eye was like, [torn] open,” Davis shared, per Dave McMenamin of ESPN.

The good thing is Davis is okay now and the Los Angeles Lakers didn’t have to deal with his potential absence. AD definitely proved he’s a warrior by coming back quickly despite the pain he went through.

With a healthy Davis and LeBron James, hopes are high that the Lakers can maintain the momentum they have now in order to make a run for a playoff seeding.
