Jazz invoke unusual clause to discourage 76ers from matching offer sheet

It's a remarkably savvy move by Utah that should discourage Philadelphia from matching the bid. Considering that the 76ers have become regulars in the second round, making trips there in five of the last six seasons, it's unlikely they'll commit to the three-year pact. 

Aside from the unique clause, if the Sixers match Reed's offer sheet, they'll exceed the $165 million luxury tax threshold, resulting in an additional $14 million in penalties. Reed would also be able to veto trades for an entire season if Philadelphia signs him. Given the annual salary Reed is set to earn, he could've been a valuable trade chip for Philadelphia at the deadline, but Utah has seemingly eliminated that possibility.

It's essentially a risk-free one-year deal on the Jazz's end, since they likely won't make the conference semifinals, despite having a talented core highlighted by All-Star forward Lauri Markkanen. Nevertheless, no matter how long Reed sticks in Utah, the team gains an intriguing piece that complements its already-formidable frontcourt.

In 69 games last season, "BBall Paul" averaged 4.2 points on 59.3 percent shooting from the field to go along with 3.8 rebounds. Though Reed's statistics aren't exactly outstanding, he has shown promise when given the opportunity for an expanded role. The 24-year-old started two games for the 76ers in their first-round match-up with the Brooklyn Nets, throughout which he averaged 10 points and 14 rebounds. 

With Reed likely out of the picture for Philadelphia, the team will rely on recent signing Mo Bamba to effectively fill the role of reigning MVP Joel Embiid's backup.
