Former NBA Player Lands 40-Month Prison Sentence

Glen “Big Baby” Davis, a former NBA player and member of the 2008 Boston Celtics championship team, has been sentenced to 40 months in prison for defrauding the NBA’s healthcare plan. Davis, 38, was also sentenced to three years of supervised release.

In November, Davis was found guilty of multiple charges, including healthcare fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to make false statements. He faced up to 20 years in prison, but the judge ultimately handed down a 40-month sentence.

According to federal authorities, Davis and others defrauded the NBA’s healthcare plan of over $5 million in a scheme that lasted at least four years. The players submitted false claims for dental services and medical care, but those services were never provided.

Davis himself submitted over $132,000 worth of false claims, including a claim for $27,200 worth of dental work at a Beverly Hills dental office on October 2, 2018. However, authorities were able to prove that Davis was actually in Las Vegas at the time and even flew to Paris later that same day, using geolocation data from his cellphone to prove his whereabouts.

Davis is one of over 20 people convicted in the case, including ringleader and former NBA player Terrance Williams, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Another NBA player, Will Bynum, received an 18-month prison sentence last month for his role in the scheme.

Davis spent eight seasons in the NBA, playing for the Boston Celtics, Orlando Magic, and Los Angeles Clippers. His time in the league was marked by his contributions to the Celtics’ 2008 championship team, but his legacy has now been tarnished by his involvement in this healthcare fraud scheme.
