Despite trying season, Marc Gasol calls it 'an honor' to play for Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers’ season came to an abrupt end last week when the Phoenix Suns eliminated them from the playoffs. In the days following, a post-mortem has taken place.

One of the things that has stood out most upon review of the year that was is how disappointing Marc Gasol’s run with the Lakers ended up being. When he initially got signed over the offseason, there were visions of him being a more productive version of Dwight Howard.

That didn’t end up happening.

It became readily apparent by the midseason mark that Gasol’s athleticism had completely waned, and that in turn led to some friction between him and the organization. Gasol was not shy about expressing his displeasure. Ultimately, Gasol remained with the Lakers through the entire season.

This past week, he reflected on the experience in fairly blunt and emotional terms.

“I came into this year with the mindset of enjoying every second of it, soaking everything in, and understanding what an honor it is to wear this jersey,” Gasol said.

“Obviously, you guys know my family history with the team and how much it meant to Pau. So for me to be here and play for this team was an honor, and it is an honor. So I didn’t take it for granted for one second.”
