Michael Chiesa believes that his UFC 291 opponent Kevin Holland would be a perfect candidate to fight for the UFC’s BMF title at some point in the future.

“Maverick” is the UFC’s #12-ranked welterweight contender, but he’s currently on a two fight-skid after suffering losses to Vicente Luque and Sean Brady. The 35-year-old will try to get back on track when he meets Holland at UFC 291, with their welterweight bout serving as the opening fight of a fantastic main card.

The night’s headlining bout is a rematch between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje. It's an outstanding fight under any circumstances, but also has the added significance of being the second BMF title fight in the history of the UFC.

Michael Chiesa Tabs Kevin Holland As Future BMF Title Contender

Much of the discussion leading up to UFC 291 has focused on fighters that might be worthy of fighting for the BMF title at a later date. Chiesa was asked who his top pick from the UFC roster would be during a discussion with Daniel Cormier and Ryan Clark on ESPN MMA's DC & RC show.

“This is gonna be an odd answer. I might put Kevin Holland at the top of that list,” Chiesa said. “This is a guy that has - anytime there’s a fight, (he's) available, doesn’t matter what weight class, that guy has made the call, that guy has made the callout. He’s a guy that down the line, maybe after this fight - I don’t think things are gonna go very well for him – but I think down the line, he could be a guy that maybe would be the third person to fight for the BMF title. To be in the third matchup.”

Holland has established himself as a fan favorite since joining the UFC in 2020, and although he’s experienced mixed results in the promotion, "Trailblazer" can always be relied upon to put on an entertaining performance.

The 30-year-old debuted in the UFC as a middleweight before moving down to the welterweight division. He famously accepted a catchweight bout with Khamzat Chimaev the day before UFC 279 after "Borz" missed weight and threw the card into disarray.

The BMF title fight and the welterweight contest between Holland and Chiesa are already matchups that make the UFC 291 main card worth watching. The night’s co-main event will also feature a pair of former champions when Alex Pereira makes his light heavyweight debut against Jan Błachowicz.
