Vadim Nemkov is already the most accomplished light heavyweight champion in Bellator history. Now he plans to do the same as a heavyweight.

Returning to the heavyweight weight class for the first time in nine years, Nemkov fights 2021 PFL heavyweight champ Bruno Cappelozza on February 24 at the PFL vs. Bellator pay-per-view.

“I’m very excited to represent Bellator,” said Nemkov, speaking through a translator. “I want to show I am one of the best in the world.”

Nemkov last competed in November at Bellator 297, defeating Yoel Romero. It marked the fifth successful defense of the light heavyweight title, a new record for the most title defenses in Bellator light heavyweight history.

Last month, Nemkov officially vacated the title, setting his sights on the heavyweight belt.

“It was a tough decision,” said Nemkov (16-2, 1 NC). “But I accomplished everything I could as a light heavyweight. Now I want to challenge myself as a heavyweight. I train a lot with the heavier guys. I train with them, and I feel comfortable.”

After the bout against Cappelozza (15-6, 1 NC), a rematch against reigning Bellator heavyweight champ Ryan Bader seems likely. Nemkov defeated Bader for the light heavyweight title in 2020, but ever since, he has watched Bader outclass training partner Valentin Moldavsky and mentor Fedor Emelianenko. Yet, if Nemkov is seeking revenge, he is keeping it close to the vest.

“I’m concentrating on Bruno,” said Nemkov. “He is a strong opponent, and I’m training hard to get ready.”

Nemkov, 31, is just now entering his prime. He is training back in Russia at high altitude–2,200 meters above sea level–in the mountains where it snows year-round.

“The winter is nothing new,” said Nemkov. “It’s winter here all the time. If you want to be the best, you have to train with the best. You have to push your boundaries. Opponents are training hard, too. I need to train harder.

“Plus, I train with Fedor. I’ve always looked up to him. He’s 47, and he still trains the way we train. That’s a great motivation for me.”

After the merger between Bellator and PFL, Nemkov still does not have all the answers about his future. But he knows his next opponent, which is all he needs for now.

“I heard rumors that PFL was trying to purchase Bellator, but there was no clarity,” said Nemkov. “I’m still not sure what will happen after this. I am focused on becoming the best heavyweight in the world.”
