UFC Clamps Down On Illegal Betting By Threatening Fighters With 'Penalties, Suspension Or Termination'

The UFC is stepping up its efforts to keep fighters and related individuals from placing any bets on fights that take place under the promotion’s banner.

The widespread legalization of sports betting in the United States over the last several years was initially met with open arms by the UFC, however the scandal involving James Krause and several of his fighters from late last year resulted in an investigation that the promotion is still dealing with.

Krause, Darrick Minner and Jeff Molina are all currently suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for their alleged involvement in the matter, and now it appears the UFC is poised to put stronger measures in place to avoid a similar situation happening in the future.

UFC Set To Introduce New System For Monitoring Bets From Fighters

According to Marc Raimondi of ESPN MMA, the UFC will start using the encrypted system ProhiBet to identify if fighters or members of their teams attempt to place bets on any of the promotion's bouts.

“ProhiBet's cutting-edge technology provides a secure and transparent method for sports properties, both professional and collegiate, and sportsbook operators, to ensure that athletes, coaches, and league/school administrative staff remain compliant with the intricate web of state regulations that govern sports betting activities."

The UFC will also be sending a training video to all rostered fighters this week in order to make sure that the athletes are aware of the regulations they need to comply with. Should fighters or a related party place a bet on any UFC bout then the video states they could face “contractual penalties, suspension, or termination.”

The investigation into Krause and his alleged gambling operation is still ongoing, but given how comprehensive these new measures are it certainly appears as if the UFC has no intention of dealing with a similar matter ever again.
