PFL's Derek Brunson Felt 'A Little Bored, Maybe A Little Complacent' In The UFC
Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Newly signed PFL middleweight/light heavyweight Derek Brunson has reflected on how things ended with the UFC following a long promotional tenure.

Brunson signed with the PFL last week and will make his league debut at the upcoming 2023 PFL Championships on November 24th. He'll face former PFL welterweight champ Ray Cooper III in a middleweight showcase bout.

Brunson will join the PFL's light heavyweight division and compete in the 2024 regular season for a title and $1 million.

After a long run as a staple in the UFC middleweight division, and considering retirement in recent years, Brunson seems rejuvenated and ready to make a splash at his new MMA home. He admitted that he might've gone through the motions towards the end of his time in the UFC.

Derek Brunson Admits Complacence Led To UFC Split

During a recent interview with TMZ Sports, Brunson turned the page on his UFC chapter and looked ahead to a new challenge.

"New goals, new aspirations, new motivation," Brunson said. "With the UFC, I kinda got bored with the UFC, maybe complacent. I found myself there for a while, ranked number three in the world and just didn't have the same motivation."

Brunson faced most of the top UFC middleweights during his promotion. He earned wins over the likes of Edmen Shahbazyan, Darren Till, and Kevin Holland towards the end of his tenure.

Brunson made his UFC debut at UFC 155; earning a unanimous decision win over Chris Leben. He signed with the UFC following the Strikeforce acquisition.

At 39 years old, Brunson is likely running out of time to earn a world title to his legacy, and he sounds happier than ever to be looking ahead to a new challenge.
