McGregor Shows Off Insane Muay Thai Kick – ‘RIP Chandler’
Sara Diggins/American-Statesman / USA TODAY NETWORK

Fans have reacted to Conor McGregor’s latest training video, which was released in preparation for his fight with Michael Chandler on June 1.

The Notorious makes his comeback on Jun 29 at UFC 303. It is the first time McGregor will fight since losing to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. A serious leg injury accompanied the defeat. It was also McGregor’s third defeat in his last four fights, as there were concerns he would never fight again. But now that he fights in store, the attention is turning towards McGregor’s kicking.

Chris Weidman has shown it can take a lot of time to fully recover from a serious leg injury. The ex-UFC Middleweight Champion broke his leg against Uriah Hall at UFC 261 in 2021. He finally returned against Brad Tavares last year, losing a unanimous decision at UFC 292. After the defeat, Weidman confirmed he had injured both his legs. Dana White called on Weidman to retire from the sport. Weidman refused, securing a win over Bruno Silva in his last fight. Weidman offered his advice to McGregor, saying there was a psychological hurdle he had to overcome.

“I know he watched my fight. I think he probably learned a lot watching my fight. Some of the red flags of what to be prepared for, for whoever he fights, and also maybe you’re not going to be able to throw [the kicks] back as much as you want. Or now, be prepared that could be something you have to deal with, so really train on kicking back.

“Because you want that to be second nature when you’re in there. For me, I thought I was good with that, but I wasn’t. I would have really worked at it more and realize there is a psychological effect when you break your leg in half like that. So you need to really get that habit back strong and focus on that. I don’t really think I need to say much. He should just watch my last fight and learn from that,” Weidman said

McGregor’s Kicks

McGregor, though, seems in good spirits. The footage above shows McGregor peppering the heavy bag with a Muay Thai kick. Chandler will likely target McGregor’s legs since there are question marks over how they will hold up. McGregor usually fights out of a karate-style stance, but the latest training footage shows more wrinkles in his MMA game.

McGregor has been inspired by the boxing success of Ryan Garcia, who beat Devin Haney on April 20. Garcia dropped Haney three times on his way to a majority decision win. McGregor was on hand to see Garcia backstage when he lost to Gervonta Davis. He expressed his belief that Ryan would bounce back, praising him for the Haney win, which is something McGregor could draw inspiration from.

“An amazing fight from two champions! Have now fought each other 7 times! That’s incredible. Some are just born to fight! Some aren’t. If you aren’t be sure to be a good gatherer cos I be hungry. God speed to both men and teams in this crazy world and congrats Ryan Garcia! Tonight is your night, I knew when he fought Tank that this guy was electric.

“Even in defeat. I went backstage after he’d been stopped to the body last time out. Only his close people were present. A win or a loss will never make or break a person to me. When you know, you know. Fighters know. The real know. God knows. Now the real fight happens for the young man, too! Stay strong kid,” McGregor stated
